Jeanette Sliwinski, a former trade-show model convicted of reckless homicide in a July 2005 crash that killed three men in a suicide attempt, is scheduled to be released from prison Oct. 2, less than halfway into her 8-year sentence.
Friends and families of the victims, along with a former Skokie police officer who investigated the case, expressed outrage at Sliwinski's release, even though her sentence reduction follows the law.
One of the victims' friends, Heather Whinna, attended every court hearing for 21/2 years after the nearly 90-m.p.h. crash in Skokie. Arriving at the courthouse early one day, she watched a man receive a 42-month sentence for stealing a scarf and hat from a Louis Vuitton store.
Whinna recently recalled the case when she learned of Sliwinski's imminent release after serving about 38 months of the 8-year sentence.
"The inequity is shocking," said Whinna of Chicago.
Sliwinski's time in prison was reduced by a sentencing law that governs many Illinois crimes other than murder and routinely cuts sentences in half, turning her 8-year sentence into 4 years. She also got credit for roughly two years and four months spent in the Cook County Jail awaiting trial, plus six months off for good behavior. Another three months were trimmed because she received counseling in prison.
As a result, Sliwinski, 26, has spent slightly more than 10 months at Dwight Correctional Center after she was found guilty but mentally ill on three counts of reckless homicide and then sentenced in November.
you can read more of this sickening shit here...
“...So do we pass the ghosts that haunt us later in our lives; they sit undramatically by the roadside like poor beggars, and we see them only from the corners of our eyes, if we see them at all. The idea that they have been waiting there for us rarely if ever crosses our minds. Yet they do wait, and when we have passed, they gather up their bundles of memory and fall in behind, treading in our footsteps and catching up, little by little.”--Stephen King
